Old age is a crucial phase of life
when people need care, dignity, and financial security. To ensure that senior
citizens live with respect and independence, both the Government of Assam
and the Government of India have introduced welfare schemes for the
elderly population.
Two of the most important initiatives are:
- Swahid Kushal Konwar Sarbajanin Briddha Pension Achoni (Assam Government)
- Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) (Central Government)

Swahid Kushal Konwar Sarbajanin Briddha Pension Achoni
The Swahid Kushal Konwar
Sarbajanin Briddha Pension Achoni is a state-level pension scheme
launched by the Government of Assam under the Department of Social
Welfare.
The scheme is named after the great freedom fighter Swahid Kushal Konwar,
symbolizing service, sacrifice, and selflessness.
Objective
To provide monthly financial assistance
to elderly citizens of Assam who have no regular source of income and belong to
economically weaker sections of society.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a permanent resident of Assam.
- Age must be 60 years or above.
- Should belong to a low-income group.
- Should not be receiving any other pension from
central or state schemes.
Benefits
Eligible beneficiaries receive a monthly
pension amount, directly transferred to their bank account through DBT
(Direct Benefit Transfer) for transparency and efficiency.

- Passport-size photo

How to Apply
Applicants can apply through:
- Offline Mode:
Submit the filled application form at the Gaon Panchayat / Municipal
Board / District Social Welfare Office.
- Online Mode:
(If available) Visit the Social Welfare Department, Assam portal for
registration updates.
2. Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS)
The Indira Gandhi National Old
Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) is a centrally sponsored scheme under
the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) by the Ministry of
Rural Development, Government of India.
Objective
To provide social assistance
to senior citizens living below the poverty line (BPL), ensuring that no
elderly person is left without financial support.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be 60 years or older.
- Must belong to a Below Poverty Line (BPL)
household.
- Should not be receiving any other government pension.
Pension Amount
The pension amount is shared
between the Central and State Governments:
- For people aged 60–79 years: ₹200 per month
(from Central Govt.) + State share.
- For people aged 80 years and above: ₹500 per
month (from Central Govt.) + State share.
(The final amount may vary depending
on the contribution of each state.)

- Bank account details
